Greetings From Santa Monica Pier

Greetings From Santa Monica Pier

Acrylic on canvas, 18"x24", by Steven John Koeppe 2004
$1500

Inspired by a PR photo of the Santa Monica Pier Sign that was taken soon after the ramp and arch were added in 1939. The dark haired beauty standing in line 8th from left is Susan Hayward. Here's the photo I worked from. This is the painting I will offer on my 2005 Calendar.

The Loof Carousel In Santa Monica Pier's Hippodrome

The Loof Carousel In Santa Monica Pier's Hippodrome

Acrylic on canvas, 30x40", by Steven John Koeppe, 2003
Collection of Cuong Le, CPA

The beautifully restored Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel in the Loof Hippodrome on world famous Santa Monica Pier is treasured by most every citizen of our city. Hand-carved early in the last century, it's truly a wonder to behold. A great subject for painting, it's featured on my 2004 calendar.

Pacific Park On Santa Monica Pier

From South Beach

1999 . Acrylic on canvas, 24"x36", by Steven John Koeppe

This painting captures the excitement and charm of a beautiful day at the Santa Monica Pier. It features people of many ethnicities and ages. The "dada" influence is seen in the empty computer-equipped wheelchair, as if its owner managed to get up and walk away.

High-quality Giclé prints of this painting are available at any size.

Pacific Park from South Beach, Sunset

1998 . Acrylic on canvas, 24"x36", by Steven John Koeppe

The Santa Monica Pier at sunset features thousands of flashing lights lining the Ferris Wheel. In the foreground, a jogger runs down the beach while a buxom brunette looks on.

La Monica Ballroom, 1926

1995 . Acrylic on canvas, 24"x48", by Steven John Koeppe

Even back in the "Roaring Twenties", things were really happening on the Santa Monica Pier. The La Monica Ballroom accommodated up to 10,000 elegantly attired dancers and featured all the top entertainers of the time. I've met many seniors that mentioned a colorful band leader named Spade Cooley who played the ball room.

Another Year in Santa Monica, 1925

Santa Monica Pier, 1925

1994 . Acrylic on canvas, 48"x54", by Steven John Koeppe

This painting was inspired by an antique photo, circa 1925. In the foreground, a Pacific Electric "red car" trolley carries visitors arriving from inland. The Graf Zeppelin floats over the bay and the infamous casino ship "Rex" is anchored offshore.

By Dawn's Early Light

1989 . Acrylic on canvas, 48"x72", by Steven John Koeppe

Bathed in twilight color, just before sunrise, all is quiet on the old pier. This painting features the old Ferris Wheel, long before Pacific Park, and Wilshire One in the background, behind Old Glory.

High-quality Giclé prints of this painting are available at any size.

Stormy Santa Monica

1992 . Acrylic on canvas, 36"x48", by Steven John Koeppe

"It never rains in sunny Southern California". Well, almost never. After a particulaly severe season of El Nino, Santa Monica lost the end of its pier; when it rains, it pours. But with rare events comes novelty. Rise to the occasion by going out and singing in the rain.

High-quality Giclé prints of this painting are available at any size.

Moonrise Over Sinbad's

On Santa Monica Pier

1993 . Acrylic on canvas, 30"x40", by Steven John Koeppe

Last of the old dance halls on the Santa Monica Pier, I painted this vestige of past glory soon after it was torn down. Rumor has it that it may someday rise again in the guise of Club 66, a retro Route 66 theme nightclub.

Ocean Park Pier, 1926

1989 . Acrylic on canvas, (2) 24x36", by Steven John Koeppe

Collection of Clayton and Catherine Day

This dyptych was inspired an old panoramic view north from Ocean Front Walk and Rose Avenue. The best part of painting it was picking out colors of buildings based recollections of Santa Monica seniors. They tell me that the umbrellas were almost always either black or faded to grey. It seems strange to us now that people would go to such extremes avoiding exposure to sunlight, even at the beach. Then again, they didn't have any sunblock.

High-quality Giclé prints of this painting are available at any size.

Malibu-Topanga Fire

1993 . Acrylic on canvas, 30"x40", by Steven John Koeppe
Whereabouts Unknown

On election day, 1993, hot Santa Anna winds swirl up a firestorm through the ridges and canyons of Malibu. This view is from just south of Santa Monica Pier, perhaps 15 minutes after I first noticed it. The burning went unabated for 3 days and nights as it was fought by thousands of fire fighters. It burned hundreds of homes and tens of thousands of mountain, canyon and beachside acres, the confligration ended after a change to damp, foggy weather.
