Even back in the "Roaring Twenties", things were really happening on the Santa Monica Pier. The La Monica Ballroom accommodated up to 10,000 elegantly attired dancers and featured all the top entertainers of the time. I've met many seniors that mentioned a colorful band leader named Spade Cooley who played the ball room.
