On the morning of February 1, 1996 Santa Monica lost a cherished landmark, The Sea Castle Apartments. Once a posh hotel, this grand old building had been abandoned after the Northridge Earthquake damaged its unreinforced masonry structure, probably beyond economically feasable repair. Santa Monica's Outlook newspaper had published an article on the previous day in which it was referred to as a refuge for homeless derelicts, drug addicts, etc. It was also derided as a dangerous fire trap. Efforts to reach its owner about correcting the situation were reportedly rebuffed. A demolition crew is currently busy raising its remains for the expensive ground beneath. ![]()
